Context Sharing Enhancement Summary
Overview
Enhanced the MCP add_context and list_contexts tools to fully support markdown formatting for rich, structured documentation sharing between AI agents.
Changes Made
1. Enhanced Tool Descriptions
add_context Tool
Before:
"Add documentation or context to a project"
After:
"Add documentation or context to share with other agents in the project.
Supports full markdown formatting for better readability.
Other agents can read this context to understand your work."
Added detailed property descriptions mentioning:
- Markdown formatting examples (headings, code blocks, lists, etc.)
- That content will be "rendered beautifully for other agents to read"
- Making titles "descriptive so other agents can find it"
list_contexts Tool
Before:
"List documentation/contexts for a project"
After:
"List all documentation and contexts shared by agents in the project.
Content is in markdown format for easy reading."
2. Enhanced Response Data
add_context Response
Now includes:
{
"success": true,
"id": "context-uuid",
"title": "Context Title",
"agent_id": "agent-uuid",
"agent_name": "Agent Name", // ✨ NEW
"tags": ["tag1", "tag2"],
"preview": "First 200 chars...", // ✨ NEW
"format": "markdown", // ✨ NEW
"created_at": "2026-01-22T...",
"shared_with": "All agents in..." // ✨ NEW
}
list_contexts Response
Now includes:
{
"contexts": [
{
"id": "uuid",
"project_id": "uuid",
"agent_id": "uuid",
"agent_name": "Agent Name", // ✨ NEW
"title": "Title",
"content": "Full markdown...",
"preview": "First 200 chars...", // ✨ NEW
"format": "markdown", // ✨ NEW
"tags": ["tag1"],
"created_at": "2026-01-22T..."
}
],
"count": 1, // ✨ NEW
"note": "Content is in markdown..." // ✨ NEW
}
3. Database Query Enhancement
Before:
SELECT id, project_id, title, content, tags, created_at
FROM contexts
After:
SELECT c.id, c.project_id, c.agent_id, a.name as agent_name,
c.title, c.content, c.tags, c.created_at
FROM contexts c
LEFT JOIN agents a ON c.agent_id = a.id
Now includes agent information with each context!
4. Preview Generation
Added automatic content preview (first 200 characters) to help agents quickly scan available contexts:
preview := content
if len(preview) > 200 {
preview = preview[:200] + "..."
}
Benefits
For AI Agents
- 🎨 Rich Documentation: Can use headings, lists, code blocks, tables, links
- 📖 Better Readability: Structured markdown is easier to parse and understand
- 💡 Knowledge Transfer: Clear documentation of implementations and decisions
- 🔍 Quick Scanning: Preview shows first 200 chars before reading full content
- 👤 Attribution: Know which agent created each context
- 🏷️ Discovery: Tags and titles help find relevant information
For the System
- 📚 Living Documentation: Knowledge base that grows as agents work
- 🤝 Collaboration: Agents can learn from each other's work
- 🔄 Context Preservation: Important decisions and patterns are documented
- 🎯 Searchability: Tags enable easy filtering and discovery
- 📊 Structured Data: Consistent format makes information accessible

Overview of all changes made
Example Usage
Agent Creating Context
// Agent shares implementation notes
await mcp.call("add_context", {
title: "Authentication API Implementation",
content: `# JWT Authentication
## Features
- ✅ RS256 signing
- ✅ Refresh tokens
- ✅ 15-minute expiry
## Endpoints
### POST /api/auth/login
\`\`\`json
{
"email": "user@example.com",
"password": "password"
}
\`\`\`
## Security Notes
> **Warning:** Always use HTTPS in production
## Testing
\`\`\`bash
go test ./internal/auth/...
\`\`\`
`,
tags: ["api", "auth", "backend", "security"]
});
Response:
{
"success": true,
"id": "context-uuid",
"agent_name": "Backend Agent",
"preview": "# JWT Authentication\n\n## Features\n- ✅ RS256 signing\n- ✅ Refresh tokens\n- ✅ 15-minute expiry...",
"format": "markdown",
"shared_with": "All agents in the project can now read this context"
}
Agent Reading Contexts
// Another agent reads available contexts
const result = await mcp.call("list_contexts");
// Result includes:
// - Full markdown content for each context
// - Preview for quick scanning
// - Agent who created it
// - Tags for filtering
// - Format indicator (markdown)
Web UI Support
The frontend already supports markdown rendering:
markedlibrary for parsing markdown to HTMLDOMPurifyfor XSS protection- Syntax highlighting for code blocks
- Responsive styling with Tailwind CSS
Agents' markdown content is automatically rendered beautifully in the web interface!
VS Code Integration
The MCP configuration includes add_context and list_contexts tools:
{
"tools": [
{
"name": "add_context",
"description": "Share markdown documentation with other agents",
"category": "documentation"
},
{
"name": "list_contexts",
"description": "Read markdown documentation from other agents",
"category": "documentation"
}
]
}
When using GitHub Copilot with the MCP server, agents can naturally share and read formatted documentation.
Testing
Test 1: Add Simple Context
curl "http://localhost:8080?project_id=PROJECT_ID&agent_id=AGENT_ID" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"jsonrpc": "2.0",
"method": "tools/call",
"params": {
"name": "add_context",
"arguments": {
"title": "Test Context",
"content": "# Test\n\n**Bold** and *italic* work!\n\n```js\nconsole.log(\"code\");\n```",
"tags": ["test"]
}
}
}'
Test 2: List Contexts
curl "http://localhost:8080?project_id=PROJECT_ID" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"jsonrpc": "2.0",
"method": "tools/call",
"params": {
"name": "list_contexts"
}
}'
Should return contexts with:
- ✅ Agent names
- ✅ Previews
- ✅ Format: "markdown"
- ✅ Full content
- ✅ Count and note
