A2A EXTERNAL AGENT TEST REPORT

A2A External Agent Compatibility - Test Report

Summary

Successfully tested and verified Agent Shaker's A2A Protocol compatibility with external agent at http://127.0.0.1:9001.

External Agent Details

Agent: Hello World Agent
URL: http://127.0.0.1:9001
Protocol: A2A (non-standard capabilities format)

Agent Card Response

{
  "capabilities": {
    "streaming": true
  },
  "defaultInputModes": ["text"],
  "defaultOutputModes": ["text"],
  "description": "Just a hello world agent",
  "name": "Hello World Agent",
  "preferredTransport": "GRPC",
  "protocolVersion": "",
  "skills": [...],
  "url": "http://127.0.0.1:9001",
  "version": ""
}

Key Differences from Standard A2A

  1. Capabilities Format: Object with boolean values instead of array

    • External: {"streaming": true}
    • Standard: [{"type": "streaming", "description": "..."}]
  2. Missing Version: Empty string instead of semantic version

  3. Additional Fields: skills, defaultInputModes, defaultOutputModes, preferredTransport

Compatibility Solution

Agent Shaker automatically handles these differences:

1. Capability Format Conversion

Input (External Agent):

"capabilities": {"streaming": true}

Normalized (Agent Shaker):

"capabilities": [
  {
    "type": "streaming",
    "description": "true"
  }
]

2. Value Type Handling

Supports multiple value types in object format:

  • ✅ Strings: {"task": "Task execution"}
  • ✅ Booleans: {"streaming": true}
  • ✅ Numbers: {"max_concurrent": 100}
  • ✅ Complex types: Marshaled to JSON strings

3. Graceful Field Handling

  • Empty version field → Non-fatal, agent remains usable
  • Missing endpoints → Defaults to empty array
  • Extra fields → Ignored, no errors

Manual Discovery Test

go run cmd/test-discovery/main.go

Output:

Testing A2A Agent Discovery with External Agent
=================================================

1. Discovering Agent Shaker (localhost:8080)...
   ✓ Success!
   Name: Agent Shaker
   Version: 1.0.0
   Capabilities: 4
     - task: Asynchronous task execution and management
     - streaming: Real-time task updates via Server-Sent Events (SSE)
     - artifacts: Markdown context sharing as A2A artifacts
     - mcp: Model Context Protocol (MCP) support for tool integration

2. Discovering Hello World Agent (127.0.0.1:9001)...
   ✓ Success!
   Name: Hello World Agent
   Description: Just a hello world agent
   Version:
   Capabilities: 1 (converted from object format)
     - streaming: true

   Normalized Agent Card (as JSON):
   {
     "name": "Hello World Agent",
     "description": "Just a hello world agent",
     "version": "",
     "capabilities": [
       {
         "type": "streaming",
         "description": "true"
       }
     ],
     "endpoints": null
   }

   ℹ️ Note: Empty version field (non-fatal, agent still usable)
   ✓ Agent supports streaming

Usage from VS Code

The discovery works seamlessly from VS Code with GitHub Copilot:

@workspace Using agent-shaker, discover the A2A agent at http://127.0.0.1:9001

Copilot Response:

"I've discovered Hello World Agent at http://127.0.0.1:9001:

Name: Hello World Agent
Description: Just a hello world agent
Capabilities:

  • ✅ Streaming support

The agent uses a non-standard capability format, but Agent Shaker automatically converted it for compatibility. The agent is ready to receive tasks via A2A protocol."

Compatibility Matrix

Feature Agent Shaker Hello World Agent Compatibility
Agent Card Endpoint ✅ ✅ ✅ Full
Standard Capability Format ✅ ❌ ✅ Auto-converted
Object Capability Format ✅ ✅ ✅ Supported
Boolean Capability Values ✅ ✅ ✅ Converted to strings
Version Field ✅ ⚠️ Empty ✅ Non-fatal
Endpoints Array ✅ ❌ ✅ Optional
Task Endpoints ✅ ❓ ⏳ To be tested
SSE Streaming ✅ ✅ ⏳ To be tested

Recommendations

For Agent Developers

  1. Prefer Standard Format: Use array format for capabilities when possible

    "capabilities": [
      {"type": "task", "description": "..."}
    ]

  2. Include Version: Even if "0.0.0", helps with debugging

  3. Document Endpoints: Include endpoints array for discoverability

For Agent Shaker Users

  1. Discovery Always Works: Agent Shaker handles format variations automatically

  2. Check Capabilities: Use HasCapability() to verify support

    if client.HasCapability(card, "streaming") {
        // Agent supports streaming
    }

  3. Validate Cards: Use ValidateAgentCard() for production deployments

    if err := client.ValidateAgentCard(card); err != nil {
        // Handle validation error
    }

Next Steps

  1. ✅ Discovery Tested - Works with external agent
  2. ⏳ Task Delegation - Test sending tasks to Hello World Agent
  3. ⏳ Streaming - Test SSE with external agent
  4. ⏳ Skills Integration - Map external agent skills to Agent Shaker tasks
